Toyota Motor Corp. said it planned to sell a combined 62,000 units of its two
new hybrid sport utility vehicles (SUVs) worldwide this year, with sales starting
in most major markets over the next three months.
Along with the Toyota Highlander, Toyota aims to sell 52,000 hybrid SUVs in
most overseas markets including North America in 2005. Toyota plans to export
the Highlander and Lexus RX 400h between April and June.
Toyota really seems to be embodying the popularity of the hybrid vehicle, especially
with the recent surge in gas prices.
The Lexus RX 400h becomes the world's first gas/electric hybrid-powered luxury
vehicle. Slated to go on sale some time in April, The Lexus RX 400h was based
on the Lexus RX 330. The RX 400h delivers greater performance, improved fuel
efficiency and significantly reduces emissions while sacrificing none of its
luxury or utility.
The RX 400h's estimated EPA combined fuel economy rating of 28 mpg matches
the average for new compact sedans and marks a 33 percent improvement over RX
330 AWD. It also gains a 67 percent edge over RX 330 in city fuel economy. And
its estimated EPA city fuel economy rating of 30 mpg exceeds most V8 and many
V6-equipped luxury SUVs by over 100 percent.
The base price for the Lexus RX 400h is $48,535, putting it $4,585 more than
